Triethyl orthoformate, also known as triethoxymethane, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H16O3, a colorless transparent liquid, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and other most organic solvents, mainly used as pharmaceutical intermediates and photographic materials.
Properties
Physical Properties: colorless transparent liquid, with irritating odor and sweet taste. Relative density 0.8909 (20/4℃), melting point <-18℃, boiling point 143℃ (102kPa), flash point 27℃, refractive index 1.3900 (25℃). Slightly soluble in water, miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
Chemical properties: unstable, will decompose in contact with water. Can be hydrolyzed, alcoholysis, ammonia and other reactions, but also as an alkylation reagent and formylation reagent to participate in a variety of organic reactions.
Usage
Pharmaceutical field: It is the raw material for the synthesis of anti-malarial drugs such as chloroquine and quinpirox, etc. It is also used for the synthesis of other drug intermediates.
Chemical field: used in the preparation of polymers, photographic drugs, photographic materials, anti-halo dyes, cyanine dyes and synthetic pesticides, etc. It can also be used as spices, plasticizers, dye intermediates, solvents and catalysts.
