Trimethyl orthoformate, also known as trimethoxymethane, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H10O3, a colorless and transparent liquid, soluble in water, alcohol and ether, mainly used as an intermediate in the production of vitamin B1, sulfonamides, antimicrobials and other medicines, as well as a raw material for spices and pesticides and an additive in polyurethane coatings.
Properties
Physical properties: colorless transparent liquid with irritating odor. Relative density 0.967(20℃), melting point - 53℃, boiling point 102℃. Slightly soluble in water, miscible in ethanol, ether, benzene and other organic solvents.
Chemical Properties: It has strong reactivity. It can be easily hydrolyzed under acidic conditions to generate formic acid and methanol; it can be condensed with compounds containing active hydrogen, such as aldehydes and ketones to generate aldehydes and ketones; it can also be used as a methoxylation reagent to participate in a number of organic synthesis reactions to introduce methoxy into the molecules of other compounds.
Usage
Raw material for organic synthesis: it is an important intermediate for synthesizing many kinds of organic compounds. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to synthesize vitamin B1, vitamin A, sulfadiazine and other drugs; in the pesticide industry, it can be used to prepare pesticide intermediates such as insecticides and fungicides. For example, it is an important raw material for synthesizing herbicides such as oxacillin.
Spice industry: used in the synthesis of spices, such as violet ketone. Violet ketone has an elegant violet aroma and is widely used in perfumes, cosmetics, detergents and other products to increase the aroma of the products.
