Detailed introduction
Xylene, with the chemical formula C8H10, is the product of the substitution of two hydrogens on the benzene ring by a methyl group, and exists in three isomers, namely, o-xylene (CAS No. 95-47-6), m-xylene (CAS No. 108-38-3), and p-xylene (CAS No. 106-42-3). In industry, xylene means a mixture of the above isomers.
Chemical Properties
Chemical Stability: It is relatively stable under normal conditions but can react with strong oxidizing agents. For example, it may burn or explode when in contact with concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid mixtures.
Flammability: It is highly flammable. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air, and it can easily catch fire and explode in the presence of an open flame or high heat.
Uses
Solvent: It is widely used in the laboratory and industry as a solvent for extracting organic substances. For example, it is used to extract oil from oilseeds, and to extract natural products such as alkaloids and flavonoids from plants.
