Detailed introduction
Petroleum ether, a light petroleum product, is a mixture of hydrocarbons of low relative molecular mass (mainly pentane and hexane), a colorless transparent liquid with a kerosene odor. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, oil and most organic solvents. Mainly used as a solvent and grease treatment, but volatile and fire. For laboratory column chromatography, petroleum ether (PE) and ethyl acetate (EA) are commonly used as eluents. Petroleum ether is not equal to gasoline, and at the same time, there is no ether bond (C-O-C) in its structure.
Uses
Solvent: It is widely used in the laboratory and industry as a solvent for extracting organic substances. For example, it is used to extract oil from oilseeds, and to extract natural products such as alkaloids and flavonoids from plants. In the paint and coating industry, it is used as a solvent to dissolve resins and pigments, helping to adjust the viscosity and drying rate of paints.
Cleaning Agent: It has good degreasing and cleaning properties and is often used to clean metal surfaces, electronic components, and laboratory glassware, removing oil stains and other organic contaminants.
Chemical Synthesis: It serves as a reaction medium in some chemical synthesis reactions. For example, in the synthesis of certain organic compounds, petroleum ether is used to dissolve reactants and provide a suitable reaction environment.
